About this tool
The NSW Health Performance Comparator is an independent research and educational tool built by Basil Byrne that re-presents publicly released Bureau of Health Information (BHI) Healthcare Quarterly data in an interactive format so users can quickly compare a hospital or Local Health District (LHD) against its peer group and against NSW state-wide totals across all measures and quarters.
It is not produced, endorsed, reviewed or verified by the Bureau of Health Information, NSW Health, or any NSW Government agency.

Disclaimer
This report is provided for research and educational purposes only. All figures are sourced from BHI's Healthcare Quarterly Downloadable data, which BHI publishes for public use under the NSW Government's Open Data Policy. Data is presented as published by BHI; no underlying measures have been recalculated.
Minor presentation differences (rounding, grouping, totals shown vs. omitted, peer-group labelling) may exist between this tool and BHI's own Data Portal or PDF reports. Users are responsible for verifying any figure against the original BHI source at bhi.nsw.gov.au/downloadable-data before relying on it for any decision, publication, or external communication. Refer to BHI's technical supplement for reporting methodology and definitions.
All data is aggregated and de-identified at source by BHI; no patient-level information is used or stored by this tool.
Compliance with BHI's terms of use
- Data is sourced exclusively from BHI's publicly released "Downloadable data" spreadsheets, which BHI explicitly publishes for custom analysis under the NSW Government's Open Data Policy.
- Figures are presented as published — no methodology has been altered and no attempt is made to re-identify individuals or link to other datasets.
- Only aggregated, de-identified figures are displayed. No unit-record patient survey data or personal information is used.
- BHI is cited as the data source on every view and in the citation below.
How to use the data responsibly
- Always cross-check headline figures against BHI's Data Portal or the published PDF before quoting them externally.
- Read BHI's Healthcare Quarterly technical supplement for measure definitions, inclusions/exclusions and known caveats.
- Treat small-volume hospitals with care — quarterly rates can swing significantly on small denominators.
- Peer-group comparisons reflect BHI's peer-group classification at the time of data load; reclassifications between quarters may affect trends.
- "Total / overnight episodes" length-of-stay figures are weighted across acute, non-acute and mental-health episodes — compare like-with-like before drawing conclusions.
